Personal Project | Music Record
Insight:
Founded in 1960, Arhoolie was one of the most important independant labels documenting American regional music forms included Cajun, zydeco, norteño, bluegrass, gospel and blues. Much of this music had either fallen out of the popular consciousness or was never well-known outside it’s region of origin. The whole effort was largely the passionate pursuit of the founder and owner, Chris Strachwitz. The acquisition by Smithsonian/Folkways is a huge step towards assuring that these recordings will survive and remain available to future generations.
Solution:
To design double LP that both celebrate the preservation and greater availability of the music, but also establish a new identity to appeal to its expanded audience.
Insight:
Based on research, I found few things that would need to help with creating a new brand for Arhoolie records:
1. One of the main aspects of represented music that it is dance music played in house dances with fast tempo where families and friends gathered for socializing.
2. Application of french would refer to the creole language and origins of zydeco.
3. Reminiscence of the graphic to the one of the primary musical instruments used in zydeco music.
